What Is Life Coaching?
Life coaching is a partnership between a Professional Life Coach and you. Through this partnership, the coach assists in clarifying goals, strategizes action plans and holds you accountable to reaching your dreams. The process includes formal conversations where the coach poses probing questions inviting you to dig deep and become clear on what you really, really want.
Life coaching also assists you in creating new habits that challenge current thoughts, beliefs and mindsets. This is a critical step in the life coaching process since these old thoughts, beliefs and mindsets are the number one block to achieving transformation. The coach also offers tools and techniques for you to use when obstacles arise to avoid reverting back to old, outdated thinking and ensure forward progress.
Generally, you seek a life coach because you are experiencing a challenge or pain in your life and cannot gain traction to move past this challenge. The encountered obstacles include outdated beliefs, lack of self-confidence and a fear-based mindset.
The Life Coach plays a variety of roles throughout the coaching process, including but not limited to, Accountability Partner, Strategist and Inspirational Leader.
In the strategist role, I help you become clear on your vision. While you may come to the coaching partnership with a particular purpose or expectation, life coaching impacts your entire life. When you struggle in one area, other areas are compromised.
I help you assign a benchmark of where you are in all aspects of your life and then measure against that benchmark throughout the coaching engagement process. I assist you with creating goals, stretching you past your comfort zone. I also inspire you to move forward towards the prize, or the feelings you desire when you are operating in your sweet spot. In addition, I engage with you to write clear action plans and help identify milestones that ensure you are moving forward.
The key aspect of this role is to ensure that you make progress in a positive, authentic way. This is done through regular conversation. As your accountability partner, I ensure that you follow through on your action items and that you capitalize on the opportunities that present themselves. I won’t let you slide and not do the work, whereas friends and family may. And, you can only coach yourself to your comfort zone. My goal is that you reach your goals and encourage you to stretch. I celebrate your accomplishments along side of you and challenge you to continue your journey.
As your inspirational leader, I engage with you to discover who you are, what makes you tick and where you want to go. I hold your vision at the forefront of our coaching partnership and inspire you to keep moving forward, in ways that feel good to you. This is achieved through a trusting, collaborative relationship.
My mission, as a life coach, is to partner with you to bridge the gap between wanting a life of more happiness, joy and fulfillment and actually living it. My purpose is to serve and teach others how to bring their light and love into the world in ways that feel real, authentic and whole. In other words, I help you become clear on who you are at a soul level, create vision and clarity around your dreams, strategize and co-create the steps to get you there and hold you accountable to taking action. My vision as a Life Coach is to give you the gift of believing in yourself, feel good about who you are and what you want and that it’s okay to the safety of your comfort zone.
What Does A Life Coach Do?
Clarify and Give Life To Your Dreams
A life coach is curious yet deliberate when it comes to asking questions that invite you to reflect on what your dreams are. These questions help create a clear picture of what you want. I invite you to be open to the limitless ways to accomplish your dreams. Often, when you have let your dreams slide, your perspective becomes narrow and options seem limited. Removing attachment to the “how”, allows you to see opportunities you may otherwise miss.
Often, dreams are pushed deep down yet the embers are still smoldering, just waiting for you to breathe life into them once more. Mary Kay Ash is quoted as saying, “Dreaming is just as essential to life as oxygen.” Oxygen allows fire to burn and be kept alive. Dreaming allows you to yearn for more and keeps you alive and present in your life. As a life coach, I help fan those embers, bring them back to life and inspire you to take action.
Set Goals and Create Action Plans
Based on your vision, a Life Coach works with you to identify smaller, action based goals. In order to strategize optimal action plans, I learn how you operate “in the zone”, understand what inspires you and get clear on the feelings you anticipate as you reach your goals. Action plans are time sensitive and are the catalyst towards making change. I help you stay on track. I also help you see the opportunities that present themselves, discuss additional options and hold you open to more than one way to achieve your desires.
Create Positive Mindset Changes
This is the cornerstone of a Life Coach’s value to the process. You have struggled with achieving your dreams because of your mindset, your beliefs and your thoughts about yourself and the world. Your stories hold you back.
I provide the tools and techniques to shift your mindset and to approach life intentionally. When your thoughts and actions are intentional, you attract an intentional life.
Encourage Personal Leadership
Personal leadership centers around how you show up in the world. You learn how to identify your strengths and step into your power with certainty and clarity. Together, we discover and release the personal brand that makes you unique and authentic, ensuring alignment both professionally and personally.
A life coach empowers your transformative journey. I do not provide the answers, tell you what to do or how to do it. I work with you to find what feels authentic to you. This is done through the relationship building process, coaching conversations, intentional tools & techniques, suggestions based on experience, brainstorming sessions and your personal reflection.
Why Does Life Coaching Work?
Life coaching works because it shifts the outdated thoughts and fear-based beliefs that have held you back. It provides clarity to your dreams and life vision as well as the everyday tools and techniques to sustain a mindset shift. You become deliberate in the decision making process and focused on the right steps to take.
Life coaching teaches you personal leadership and accountability towards your life. It makes you aware that life is about choices, you always have them. You are clear on what you want and where you want to go. It makes the work to get there seem effortless because you are engaged in activities that fuel your soul.
A life coach partners with you to:
- Be accountable to your life and show up on your terms
- Discover your dreams and clarify your vision
- Be a catalyst for change
- Remain curious, from an outside perspective
- Remove conditional beliefs and mindsets
- Recognize what holds you back
- Anchor into your self-confidence
- Celebrate your accomplishments
- Identify and face your fears, worries, comparison thinking and anxiety causing beliefs
- Become clear on who you are
- Engage in and understand where you are right now and where you want to be
- Create strategic goals and action plans to move forward
- Be deliberate in your journey by providing the tools, resources and coaching you need, not a “one size fits all” approach
- Listen to your wants and give you what you need
- Create intention and traction on your dreams
- Inspire you to thrive in life rather than simply survive
- Encourage you to let go of mediocrity and stand in your power
- Learn to set boundaries for you and others
- Step outside of your comfort zone
The life coaching process generally involves a free discovery call where you and the coach discuss what you are looking for out of the relationship. During my discovery calls, I listen to your challenges and expectations and then discuss how I can (or maybe can’t) help you. This conversations gives you a high level overview of what to expect from the relationship.
Coaching calls are scheduled regularly throughout the month. During the first sessions, you build a relationship with your coach that enables her to learn more about your personality style, how you like to learn, who you are when you feel like you are operating in your sweet spot.
In my coaching practice, the first few conversations help me tailor the program to inspire you to take action. It also identifies the right tools for your learning and development. For example, if you tell me you don’t like to read, I am not going to give you a suggested reading list!
Future sessions help you unearth long forgotten dreams and create new ones that fit who you want to be (flash insight… that person is there, you just need to coax them out!). This helps set goals that are satisfying and fulfilling for you and that lead to action plans to manifest your dreams and desires. Throughout this process, limiting beliefs and old mindset patterns emerge and we work on ways to shift these thoughts, beliefs and patterns. That’s the only way to create real breakthroughs! You must be ready to let go of old, outdated thinking and lean into the discomfort of new thought patterns.
Tools & Techniques
Tools and techniques are pivotal to mindset transformation. Some coaches use in depth processes such as neuro-linguistic programming, emotional freedom tapping and hypnosis.
I share simple, clear techniques that are easy for you to implement and stay engaged with. Some of these tools include a gratitude practice, celebration, intentions, affirmations, visualization, vision boards and journaling.
Who Benefits From Coaching
Everyone can benefit from life coaching! Each of us usually has an area(s) in our life that is not thriving. That’s why you often hear of people complaining they wish they had more balance in their life. There is one or more areas compromising balance. When life throws curve balls, it’s difficult to become inspired and motivated to keep moving forward. Life coaching provides the tools and techniques that create new habits which shifts your mindset from fear and worry to joy and positivity.
However, let’s get a little more specific. Perhaps one or more of these statements sounds familiar. You’ve got to start from an honest place. These thoughts are coming from your ego, that place in your head that wants to protect you from becoming “more” because “more” is unknown and is a risky, scary adventure.
“I’m … (insert bored, frustrated, angry, etc). I know there is something more for me, but I am not sure what “more” is.”
“I thought I would be someplace different in my life right now, I am not sure who the real me is.”
“I want to commit to myself and feel ready for change but I’m not sure if I can do it.”
“I want to invest in myself and my future, but I don’t think I can afford it.” or “I don’t deserve it.”
“I want to change my mindset to positivity and abundance, but I’m not sure if I am ready to leave my comfort zone.”
Or how many of you can claim this little beauty? “I can coach myself, all I need to do is (insert whatever you are thinking here)”. I hear this one a lot! The coaching process gives you permission to let go of the Lone Warrior within and receive the help you need to take clear, sustainable actions. Remember, you can only coach yourself to your comfort zone.
Guess what, there is good news. These feelings and thoughts are what brought you are here and of course you have them. After all, change is a scary, risky adventure. It’s not a coincidence you are here. You are here because you are compelled to find a different, better way of living yet lack the guidance and will power to get you there. You are here because you have read the books, attended the courses and listened to the podcasts but have yet to implement the ideas into a sustained practice.
